Need Help With Steering Box Upgrade Empty Need Help With Steering Box Upgrade

Post  efladerr Sun Feb 26, 2017 6:29 pm

Hi guys, I'm working on my 1986 caprice doing and lq4 swap with a t56 but before I get start doing that I want to upgrade my steering box to a fast ratio box if possible I was going to get the flaming river part no. FLA-FR1560 but I've done done some researching and found that alot of people having problems with then I found this steering box from turn one "click here to see". which is a replacement for the Saginaw 700 series steering boxes as they say. So my question is will a Saginaw 700 series steering box fit a 1986 caprice ?

and please tell me If anyone is interested in seeing a project thread on the car I already have some pics but I'm too lazy to start a project thread xD.

    thank you Very Happy.

Well ofcourse we want a project thread! But other than that im no help, ive looked into getting a faster ratio gear box but hadnt purchased one yet for my 79, I know Classic Industries has a 2.5 turn lock to lock, and i hear the third gen f bodies use a quick ratio and are direct bolt ins if i remember correctly. I think they changed the fittings on the gear box in 1980? i cant remember, that doesnt sound right, i think it was the later 80s they changed i think it was to metric fittings, again im no help with this one lol

ok I will do one as soon as I can Smile. I read a little bit about third gen F-bodies lots of people said that a diffrent pitman arm is needed for the b-body I didnt like the Idea because one day I will be getting a hotchkis steering linkage and i fear that it will cause some problems. also I really want to try the turn one box but its too expensive to buy it and not use it if it doesn't work for me. do you know the series number of the b-body steering box ?

Ive seen a few brands out there going for well over 500 dollars for a gear box, and if i were to do it which i will id just get a reman in whatever ratio a full 2.5 turns lock to lock is.

I have an extra F41 gearbox from a '94 caprice i picked up last summer. It's the same as the 12.7:1 gearbox from a 9C1 with the double wide alignment key on the pitman arm. I can dig it out and send pics if you want, just PM me.

I think I'll just order that turn one steering box and if it doesn't fit I'll just convince my self that it will help me with a future project xD.

I also found a used box from a 1982-92 Camaro for $49.99 plus shipping.

It is used, so that would be taking a chance on condition.  Its a 2 1/4 lock to lock supposedly.

So I sent an email to turn one asking if the T12BASE steering box would fit my 86 caprice, And the said that it's a direct fit. And the stock pitman arm will work just fine. So I'll be getting one at the end of this month. what sucks is that I may need to wait one year before the car runs so I won't know how it preforms as soon as it's in :. thanks a lot for the help guys Smile.
