2nd gen F body steering box swap Empty 2nd gen F body steering box swap

    Post  78i6belair Thu Dec 07, 2017 7:08 am

    Hi there.

I'm really wanting to swap out my original steering box on my 78 Bel Air sedan for a 2nd gen Camaro/Firebird quick ratio steering box.

I was on rock auto and was looking at a steering box (A1 Cardone pn# 276510) for a 1978 Z-28 Camaro.

Is this an ideal steering box to swap out or are there better ones for this mod? I'm after a higher steering effort (thicker torsion bar) and a 2.5 turns lock to lock.

    Thanks

whats the price on it? aftermarket units can be pretty pricey, might be worth it to just go for it. certainly is gonna be better than the stock one

    Hi there.

It's $200 from my local parts supplier and I'm hoping this steering box has a thicker torsion bar (increased steering effort) and a quicker ratio than my original box (2.5 turns v.s 3.5 turns)

I also hope that the pitman arm degree sweep it the same for a 77-96 B car as it is for a 70-81 F car. I believe that it's 87 degrees for a B car steering box.

i dont know about the degree sweep, but i swapped out my stock 77 unit for a 95 9c1 steering box, which is a direct bolt in. the flares in the ends were slightly different, and i just put them in to see if they would seal, and they did, havent leaked in over a year. these are about 2-2.5 turns
