91-92 Fleetwood rearend Empty 91-92 Fleetwood rearend

Post  terry cronk Thu Mar 03, 2016 5:29 pm

I have a line on a 91-92 rearend w/sway bar. Out of a Cadillac Fleetwood. The price is good.

I believe it also has 11"brakes. I think this will fit under my 79 Caprice!?!

It should have at least 3.42 or 3.73 gears. I will know more tomorrow after they pull the cover.

Any advice on this rearend! I will measure it for length etc. I believe its
    an 8.5.

Otherwise it would have the smaller brakes.

    Any thoughts????
    Surprised

It's a good rear that will bolt right in with no mods. If you have access to the car it came out of, you can check the SPID sticker to see the gear ratio.

I did a recheck on ad. Its out of a 92 Buick Roadmaster.

I will check the rear axle. The cover was removed. So easy check.

There's a good chance it has 2.56 gears.

Axle Ratio RPO Code Ring/Pinion Teeth Application
    2.56 GM8 41/16 Std. Roadmaster LT1
    2.73 GU2 41/15 Std. Caprice L99 (exc. 9C1)
    2.93 GW9/GU3 41/14 Std. Caprice LT1 (exc. 9C1), Opt. Roadmaster LT1
3.08 GU4 40/13 Std. Caprice 9C1/LT1 (Police), Std. Impala SS
    3.23 GU5 42/13 Opt. Caprice L99, Std. Caprice 9C1/L99 (Police)
    3.42 GU6 41/12 Std. 91-93 Caprice 9C1/L05, Std. 94+ Fleetwood w/V4P
    3.73 GT4 41/11 Std. 91-92 Fleetwood Brougham w/V4P

*V4P = 7,000 lb. trailer towing package... look for a hitch.

It came with the stock rear sway bar(.950 diameter), of which my 79 Caprice did not have.

I got it off cleaned up and powder coated. Along with the new lower control arms & bolts etc.(GM).

My next item is rebuilding the rear with new brakes, springs, brake cylinders, bushings, brake lines, drums and gears(4.10).

I found that the old drums weigh like 24 lbs. each. Heavy cast and bust up now in my removal.

I can get the new ones that are only 17 lbs. at AutoZone. Around $36.00/each.

I will be taking the Auburn posi. down for cleaning. These are the cone type posi., not the clutch pack Eaton style.

Soon as I get the whole thing down, backing plates off to powder coat. Maybe even the whole rearend(I have done that before).

All in good time. One thing at a time.
