1996 Caprice 9c1 front suspension help. Empty 1996 Caprice 9c1 front suspension help.

Hi there I am new to this forum and am in desperate need of some help. I need to replace my front upper and lower control arm bushings, upper control arm shafts and upper and lower ball joints. I know that I have 5/8 lower ball joints. My question is, is that the only difference that my suspension has from the regular caprice. I whent to my local autozone and they only carry the hole control arms $225 for the uppers and $249 for the lowers. I cant buy the compleat arms at this time. And my local dealerships just told me that everything has been discounted.I want to refurbish them myself. I really don't want to order a hole bunch of stuff from the internet and at the time of my tear down and rebuil have things not fit. This is my daily driver so I need to get it done in a weekend. Any body out there if they have rebuild there front end and have part numbers or any leads to were I can get this info it would greatly be appreciated. Thank you very much.

My buddy has a 95' 9c1 and just got everything thru auto zone, I did my 77' caprice recently takes some time and work but u might find a better deal on the control arms on RockAuto I ordered some (but returened em ) they came next day they were 120 for both lower but 9/16 ball joint
If u wanna replace the stuff yourself just specify 5/8 for ball joints

1996 Caprice 9c1 front suspension help. Empty 5/8 lower ball joints #K6141 (police, taxi, public service cars even ASTRO vans)

    Post  Gooched78Caprice Sun Oct 30, 2016 12:03 pm

Originally later 95 and 96 Caprice 9c1's came with 5/8" ball joints and were found under part # K6141.

For anyone that swapped their spindles and lower BJ's to accept 5/8" or have a later 95or 96 9C1 with the 5/8" BJ's you have a couple options to find them.

Here's the link from Rock auto to find under 1995 Caprice lower 5/8 ball joints:

    www.google.com+URL+%2F" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/chevrolet,1995,caprice,5.7l+v8,1037483,suspension,ball+joint,10070?a=Referer+www.google.com+URL+%2F

    Premium Moog K6141 for $24.79
    Mevotech MK6141 $17.00
    MAS B6141 $7.09

You can also fing that 2002 RWD Astro Vans (not AWD) have the same part number as the later 95 and 96 9C1's and Fleet vehicles for 5/8" front lower ball joints. If your local store cant find anything for a Caprice, ask about an RWD Astro Van just make sure it ends in part #6141, and you should be good as well.

1996 Caprice 9c1 front suspension help. Empty 5/8 bottom ball joints?

Post  terry cronk Mon Feb 13, 2017 10:03 am

Someone mentioned here awhile back about converting from 9/16 ball joints to 5/8.

The conversion was something about drilling out the spindle hole?   Apparently that's all they did.

I think the taper on the ball joint is the same.  If I could get that information, appreciated.

Making for a more safe ride.

P.S. RockAuto does have the Police/station wagon 5/8 lowers.

1996 Caprice 9c1 front suspension help. Empty 5/8 ball joint spindle

Post  terry cronk Tue Mar 28, 2017 10:50 am

I asked awhile back if the person who mentioned converting a spindle over to 5/8" ball joint would reply.

Have not heard any reply. Maybe I misread the article being possible.

    Kind of like to know.

The taper seemed to be tge same when i put both ball joints side by side to see the difference, i mean theres only so many tapers out there but, i dont know if there would be enough thread to put the nut on if you just madethe spindle hole bigger, but i could see that working though

So you made a comparison. Did you actually install the larger ball joint anyway.

Maybe the hole up top would clear anyway???

Just a comparison, i didnt install, i just compared side by side at the parts store. Im gonna say the hole up top wont be big enough, im sure that will haveto be drilled bigger, but the taper should be exactly the same. They looked the same.

If the Moog K6141 lowers are 5/8" then I would think the uppers are as well. That's K5208.

    Any ideas?
