1978 Impala Exhaust Empty 1978 Impala Exhaust

    Post  tero78 Sun Oct 06, 2019 8:52 pm

I just purchased a 1978 Impala. I want to put headers and flowmasters on it to make it sound better. Can you guys give me some advice on which headers and mufflers i should go with?

1978 Impala Exhaust Empty headers and Mufflers

Your bigger problem will be insufficient clearance under the transmission cross member for the left side downpipe. I believe that headers generally are more trouble than they are worth, and an exhaust system off a 96 Impala SS or Caprice would be more trouble free. As for mufflers, I personally like the Magnaflow stainless straight through mufflers.

I was shopping around for some cheaper good sounding 2 chamber mufflers for my 83 olds and I stubble across some mufflers called Flowmonster and they sound very good if not better than flowmasters for the price. Here’s the link...

I'm using a Pypes exhaust for a 64-67 chevelle, tho I did have to cut the tailpipes in 3 places and weld them back together to fit properly and clearance the left side of my transmission crossmember. The 64-67 Chevelle/Cutlass/Malibu has a 115 inch wheel base, so the exhaust works decently on the 77-up B Body with a 116 inch wheel base. Magnaflow's setup and Flowmaster's exhaust look like they'll work ok. I think the Buford T. Justice Caprice (LINK: https://bangshift.com/category/general-news/project-cars/bangshiftprojects/buford/ ) uses the flowmaster kit.
